Sustainable Blister Packaging for EU 2026: Recyclable Materials, PETG vs APET, REACH/RoHS & PVC Retail Limits

Eco-Friendly Recyclable Thermoforming Materials for Blister Packaging

The core trend of EU packaging regulation pushes brands toward mono-material thermoforming structures. Mixed-material laminates are discouraged because they break the recycling stream and cannot achieve high recyclability grades under PPWR.

The most widely accepted eco-friendly blister options are mono-plastic sheets: APET, PETG, PP and PS. These materials can be produced with recycled content such as rPET, helping brands meet EU recycled content targets. Biodegradable thermoforming materials are also available for specific niche applications, yet buyers need to be cautious. Many biodegradable plastics cannot be processed in standard plastic recycling facilities. If mixed into household plastic waste, they may contaminate conventional recycling streams. Therefore, biodegradable blister is not always the best pick for general retail packaging, even though it sounds eco-friendly.

At Angzhan Plastic Packaging, we prioritize mono-material blister solutions for EU customers. We source traceable raw sheets and can provide material test reports to verify recyclability and recycled content for your compliance documentation.

PETG vs Regular APET Blister: Practical Differences for EU Retail Projects

APET and PETG both belong to the PET family and are the most popular transparent recyclable blister materials for European retail, but they serve different use cases.

Regular APET (amorphous PET) offers excellent clarity, good rigidity and lower material cost. It works perfectly for shallow-draw blister trays, product inserts and normal retail clamshells. Its biggest advantage is high recyclability, which aligns well with PPWR mono-material requirements. The limitation is its lower impact resistance and poor performance for deep-draw forming. When the forming depth increases, APET tends to crack or thin unevenly.

PETG is a modified PET copolymer. It features superior ductility, deep-draw capability and outstanding impact resistance. It will not crack easily during deep thermoforming, making it ideal for premium retail clamshells and complex-shaped packaging. However, PETG has a higher raw material cost compared to APET. While PETG is recyclable, its recycling process is slightly more demanding than standard APET.

For your EU project selection: choose APET for standard, shallow packaging with budget control; select PETG for high-end products requiring deep draw and strong anti-breakage performance.

REACH & RoHS Compliance for Imported Blister Packaging

Many importers underestimate chemical compliance risks for thermoformed blister packaging shipped into the EU.

REACH (EC 1907/2006) managed by ECHA governs substances of very high concern (SVHC) inside packaging articles. If any SVHC exceeds 0.1% w/w within a homogeneous material, notification and SCIP database submission are required. REACH Annex XVII also restricts hazardous additives including certain phthalates and heavy metals in plastic sheets, colorants and coating layers. The SVHC candidate list updates regularly, so one-off testing cannot guarantee permanent compliance. Batch material verification is essential for stable supply.

RoHS originally targets electrical and electronic equipment. Although RoHS does not legally apply directly to packaging itself, nearly all EU electronics customers extend RoHS requirements to blister inserts packaged together with PCBA, sensors and electronic components. Non-compliant blister packaging may cause the whole finished product to fail market surveillance or customs inspection.

Our PET, PP, PS and PETG raw sheets come with complete REACH and RoHS certificates. For coloured or flocked blister trays, we conduct extra tests on masterbatch and adhesive to rule out hidden hazardous substances. We can supply full declarations of conformity and test reports to support your EU import audits.

Is PVC Blister Still Acceptable for European Retail in 2026?

There is no full EU-wide legal ban on PVC thermoformed packaging at present. Nevertheless, under PPWR, PVC cannot reach Grade A or B recyclability rating. EU domestic waste recycling infrastructure lacks mature systems to process PVC retail blister at scale. Even though PVC can technically be recycled in dedicated industrial circuits, retail PVC packaging enters household waste streams and delivers very low real recycling rates.

PVC also carries persistent chemical risks. Common plasticisers in PVC such as phthalates are restricted under REACH Annex XVII. Many large European supermarket chains and online retailers have already implemented internal policies to phase out PVC packaging, regardless of minimum legal requirements.

PVC may still be usable for closed-loop industrial circulation scenarios with dedicated waste recovery. But for new consumer retail packaging launched in 2026, we strongly recommend brands avoid PVC blister development. Switching to mono-material APET, PETG, PP or PS will help you avoid compliance risks, retailer rejection and RAPEX market alerts.

Final Takeaway

When designing blister packaging for EU retail in 2026, material selection is no longer a simple trade-off between transparency and price. You need to combine recyclability performance, forming characteristics, REACH/RoHS chemical compliance and retailer material restrictions. Mono-material APET and PETG are the preferred transparent alternatives replacing PVC for most new retail projects.

At Angzhan Plastic Packaging, our engineering and compliance team supports you from material selection, sample fabrication to full compliance documentation. If you plan to launch new products in the EU market or replace your existing PVC blister packs, feel free to contact us for material recommendations and certificate review.
